The South African Open Chess Championships will be taking place from 27 September until 3 October at the Tshwane University of Technology.

More than 200 development players who will participate in section C for players who have just started playing the game.

This year there will also be a celebrity championship section, where entertainers will play for R10,000 to be donated to their charity of choice.

Organising committee member Leon de Beer believes that chess is actually very similar to life.

“Take responsibility for your actions – That’s the main thing you can learn from chess. You can apply that in real life. In everything you do you have to make the right choices. You have to be responsible and whether it’s the right choice or the wrong one you will get punished or rewarded,” he said.

De Beer explained you do not need to be a professional to enter.

“There are three sections. The A section is for the top players. Then we’ve got the B section that’s better for players who don’t play so well. Then there’s the C section for development players playing for the first time,” he said.

Entry forms for the tournament will be available at King Pie outlets from 6 September 2010.

Prospective players have to complete the entry forms and submit them to the address as indicated on the entry form before 20 September 2010.
