In a historic landmark for Vietnamese chess, grandmaster Le Quang Liem has become the country’s first player to enter the world’s top 100 rankings.

The World Chess Federation (FIDE) announced Thursday that Liem was now ranked 93rd with his current FIDE Elo rating of 2,647.

In the new rankings, only two grand masters from South East Asia are in the world’s top 100. The other is Filipino grandmaster So Wesley, ranked 77th.

Only seven grandmasters among the top 100 were born from 1990-1993. Liem was born in 1991.

Norwegian grand master Carlsen Magnus topped the list with a FIDE Elo rating of 2,810.

Liem is now ranked seventh among the world’s top 20 junior grand masters under 20 years old.
