Iran draws with Russia at Aeroflot Open

Iran’s chess grandmaster Ehsan Qaem Maqami has been held to a draw against his Russian rival in the second round of the Aeroflot Open.

The 26-year-old Iranian chess player now has 5.1 points after he drew with Evgeny Tomashevsky on Thursday.

The Iranian female chess player, Atousa Pourkashian, lost to the international grandmaster Irina Krush in the second round of the tournament on the same day.

In the third round of the Aeroflot Open, Qaem Maqami will play the Ukranian grandmaster and Pourkashian will meet the international grandmaster from the Netherlands.

Qaem Maqami – who has participated in nearly 40 international events – has an Elo rating of 2604 and was named by the World Chess Federation (FIDE) as the most active and promoting player in 2004.

The Aeroflot Open Chess Festival 2009 is currently being held at the Hotel Gamma-Delta in the Izmailovo Tourist Complex in Moscow, Russia.
