ROOK-IE Crosby schoolchildren are set to be kings of the chess board after pawning the services of British Grandmaster Nigel Davies.

Merchant Taylors’ School has drafted in the Southport-based star to help improve the Junior Boys’ team’s national ranking.

Last year, the team came seventh in the English National Schools’ Championships, beating their previous best-ever position of ninth.

Mr Davies is a winner of 15 international chess tournaments, and was awarded the International Grandmaster title in 1993.

Junior Boys’ headteacher Janet Thomas said: “We have some outstanding young chess players and we believe that Nigel is just the man to help them unlock their exciting potential.”

The Crosby school isn’t just seeking tournament triumph, however. It sees chess as a way of developing the parts of a young mind that normal education fails to reach.

Nigel is also being employed on the Senior Boys’ school’s enrichment programme.
