Nxg6
Not so easy. First of all, sacrifices on g6 are dubious because of the d6-g3 X-ray.
When Ne5 goes, interruptive Bxg3 damages. So 1. Nxg6 Bxg3 and there is nothing
real. 2. Qxg3 hg6 3. Bxg6 then even 3…. Qxg2+ 4. Qxg2 Bxg2 seems to be winning
for Black.
The idea of Nxf7 sacrifice seems more promising and the weakness of dark squares
f6-g7-h6 can be exploited but first White has to clear the space a bit.
1. Bg5 seems to be a really troubling move, since Nf6 has nowhere to go
1… Nh5? 2. Qxh5! gh 3. Bh6 + Kh8 4. Nxf7 #
1… Be7 2. Nxf7! Kxf7 3. Bxf6 Bxf6 4. Qxh7+ should be ending fast
1… Bxe5 2. de Nd7 3. Qh6 with the deadly threat Bf6 and a mating net.
(I first thought about 3. Bf6 with a cute Q sacrifice threat 4. Qxh7+! Kxh7
5. Rh3 – Rh8 mate but after 3… Nxf6 4. ef White has no control over c1
square so Black can have a cute Q sacrifice too: 4… Qe5!! (Rxe5 Rc1 with mate)
and Black wins pawn f6 and the game)
After 3. Qh6 I cannot see any good defense.
3… Qc5 (to get to f8 4. Bf6 Qf8 defending) loses pressure on g2 so
4. Rh3 kills
3…. Kh8 leads to a familiar check-mate trick: 4. Bf6 Nxf6 5. ef Rg8
6. Qxh7!!+ Kxh7 7. Rh3 mate
That’s what i can see without a chessboard, some details may be needed
to polish.
The easiest refutation of sacs on g6 is 1. B:g6 fg 2. N:g6 B:g3 3. Q:g3 Q:g2+ and black has a R for a couple of pawns.
1. Bg5 is probably best. 1…B:e5 2. de Ne4 forks the B and R, White must play 3. B:e4 but now Q:e5 and the black Q guards the sensitive a1-h8 diagonal. But White has a piece for a pawn and can easily consolidate with 4. Qh4 and 5. Rge3 holding everything.
Other N moves at black’s second are dealt with above.
2…h5 is also worth considering, but not for long. White simply captures the Nf6 and regroups, shifting his attack entirely to the weak dark squares and retaining his extra piece.
Black cannot take the rook on g3…..
1. Nxg6 bxd3
2. Ne7+ Rxe7
3. Qxe3+ Kh8
4. Qg7#
If black takes the knight after ng6, white can emmediately play Rg5 threatning the black Queen, after which black cannot hold on to this game for long enough..
Correction:-
1. Nxg6 Bxg3
2. Ne7+ Rxe7
3. Qxg3 Kh8
4. Qh7#
Qg7#
yESTERDAY WHWN i SAW THE PROBLEM FIRST i THOUGHT 1.BXg6 might be the move but I was convinced with tappu’s 1.Nxg6. I also saw the catastrophe following 1…. Bxg3. white conveniently makes use of black’s failure to close the g file.
Please do not attach any meaning to the capital letters. Caps Lock was on.
There seems to be a problem in posting for Troitzky’s puzzle today
