Weekend chess tournament to honor late Sheriff Leo Samaniego

EL PASO – The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and the El Paso Chess Club will host a chess tournament Saturday dedicated to the memory of late Sheriff Leo Samaniego.

The tournament will take place at the Northgate Optimist Hall, 4201 Skyline, in Northeast El Paso. Entry fee is $5. Registration for the tournament will be at 8 a.m., with games beginning at 9, 9:45 and 10:30 a.m., and 12:30, 1:15 and 2 p.m.

The tournament will be a modified five- to six-round Swiss system in three categories: elementary, middle school and high school. The top performers in each section will play the top performers in the law enforcement category.

Snacks will be available for purchase. Participants are asked to provide their own chess equipment.
