Massive turnout at Chess for Youth

Kolkata, May 28 A record number of 430 chess players are vying for the honours in the 3rd Tea Board of India Chess for Youth tournament, which got underway at the Netaji Indoor Stadium yesterday.

The 8-round Swiss League 1-hour rapid chess tournament is being organised by Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy in association with Allsport Management.

In the premiere section top seed, Grandmaster Abhjit Gupta of Rajasthan was shocked by Soumya Thakurta in the 2nd round with the black pieces. On a day of upsets, Eesha Karvade of Pune, too, bit dust against Debarshi Mukherjee in the opening round.

GM S Arun Prasad however, won both his games and outwitted Sayan Bose and Satyajit Kundu with ease.

Asian Junior girls champion WGM Mary Ann Gomes beat Sayan Majumdar and Debanjan Dutta.

World Under-8 girls’ champion Ivana Furtado of Goa beat Koustav Kr Chakraborty in the 2nd round and has 1 point to her credit.

Earlier the meet was inaugurated by the Mayor of Kolkata Mr Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya.

Also present on the occasion were Mr Pratim Chatterjee, the minister for fire services, Mr Kshiti Goswami, the P.W.D. minister and Mr T.H. Ireland, Principal St James School, Mr. Saurav Kothari, Natonal Pool and Snooker Champion.
