After investigation and summarization the experience of the Republic of Kalmykia to introduce “chess” as a part of the general compulsory education, the Public Administration of Education of the Pskov region, together with the regional Chess Federation sent a proposal to the Governor of the region M. Kuznetsov to introduce a new curriculum discipline – “chess” at schools. The regional administration approved the proposal by the order №209-r from July 28th 2008.
The 10th of October was established as a Day of children’s chess in Pskov region. The Day is devoted to the introduction of the new discipline – “chess” in 100 basic schools of this region. As a part of the holiday schoolchildren prepared the theatrical plays on chess theme for their friends, watched photos (“Chess in the Pskov region”) and chess programs (“Chess in fairy tales”), and also took part in the simultaneous games against the high-ranking officials and the prominent chess players of the region. According to the results of the session, the best players were presented with diplomas and sweet prizes from the Dairy plant of Velikie Luke and the representation of the confectionery factory named after N.K.Krupskaya in Pskov.
Nearly 60,000 children participated in the Day of children’s chess and more than 2000 schoolchildren directly played simultaneous games against the members of the local authority and municipalities and the regional Chess champions in different age categories. In particular, the Governor of the region M. Kuznetsov gave a session on 21 boards, the Deputy Governor of the region, the Head of the regional Federation of Chess D. Shakhov – on 22 boards, the Vice Chairman of the Pskov regional Assembly V. Kalensky – on 20 boards. For the first time such a big event was held in the Pskov region to draw children’s attention to the wise, exciting and intellectual game. The positive comments of the schoolchildren and the organizers of this event strengthened the confidence of the Public Administration of Education of the Pskov region and the Chess Federation of the region to celebrate this holiday annually.
