You’re kidding! A 16 move draw? With only a pawn each off the board. Why not agree to a draw before the game starts (and not bother to get out of bed)? Maybe Carlsen saw that Anand wasn’t fooled by his opening move and decided to offer a draw.
As expected draw! Good manuring of knights by Anand!!
I was a bit disappointed that Anand didn’t press a bit more and try to exploit Carlsen’s nervousness, with 12. … Ne4 instead of 12. …Nd5, followed by b5 or b6. It would have maintained some edginess in the position, where black probably has more play than white.
The first game of the Spassky – Fischer match was way more interesting.
On a positive note this game will have the effect of reducing the chess server load for all of the subsequent games.
It also should reduce sponsorship interest from large companies in emerging talent, like Caruana, Karjakin and Giri who might have used those funds to go after Carlsen. So a real boa constrictor move from Carlsen here.
Even though Carlsen won’t reveal his seconds we can guess now that it is Boris Gelfand. Without a doubt the biggest psychological shock to the Anand camp, who probably believed Carlsen when he said the last World Championship lacked over the board play.
Another psychological blow to Anand is that he has conditioned himself to play long games and now Carlsen switches to short games making all of that preparation for naught.
My guess is the match will resemble Bogoljubov vs Bogoljubov that Bogoljubov played against himself in preparation for his match against Alekhine.
Hi Susan Polgar,
Welcome to Chennai,Susan the commentator of the game.
Over the “Youtube”,I had seen you in the commentary stands – Cool & Nice.
Both great legends of the game, had begun to display their skills – Nice.
Both are clever players,I am a fan of Anand in chess. Anand has many unfold skills and has all skills to win this tournament, these words doesn’t undermine Carlsen’s phenomenal skills in the game.
[ The above words not said just because I am a fan of Anand, its said purely based on Anand’s skill ]
Ever freindly
Venkatesapalani Thangavelu [ In short “Venky” India – Chennai ]
What a snoozefest this one was. Not a promising start.
