1 Bxh7+! Black loses quickly no matter what:
1 … Kxh7 2 Qh5+ Kg8 3 Rh3 and mate is coming on either h7 or h8 on the next move.
Alternatively, 1 … Kh8 2 Qh5 Re8 (otherwise 3 Bg6+ and 4 Qh7#) 3 Bg6+ Kg8 4 Bxf7+ Kf8 5 Ng6+ Kxf7 6 Nh8++ and now either black choice succumbs quickly:
6 … Kf8 7 Qf7#
6 … Ke7 7 Rxe6#
Chris Falter
Kxd7 Qxd7 ( gets the black queen off the d8-h4 diagonal)
Bxh7 Kxh7
Qh5+ Kg8
Rh3 Bh4
Rxh4 black any move
Qh8 mate
I think just a direct assault on h7 wont work because the bishop is linked to the queen along the d8-h4 diagonal by bumping the black queen off that diagonal i think it allows for the mate
to anon #1
what happens on the line
1 Bxh7+ Kh8
2 Qh5 Bg5
?
r1bq1rk1/1p1n1ppp/p3pb2/4N3/2P5/1P2RQ2/P4PPP/1B2R1K1 w – – 0 1
how about this for defense.
1. Bxh7+ Kh8
2. Qh5 Bg5
this prepares Bh6 blocking the check. Now where is the mate????
I think there is no mate now. But black still has some problems.
Anonymous above me
wasn’t that line found by the third anonymous guy/girl?
leider sehe ich nichts besseres wie
1.Bxh7+ Kh8
2.Qh5 Bg5
3.Bg6+ Bh6
4.Nxf7+ Rxf7
5.Bxf7
aber es muss hier etwas besseres geben!
please,help us susan!
nice puzzles anyway.thanx.
1.Bxh7+ Kh8
2.Qh5 Bg5
3.Be4+ Bh6
4.Bxa8 with material advantage (B vs. R+P) and the king is pinned down terribly.
the new year brought an even more difficult one … i’m sure, i’d have failed over the board – but it is interesting, and finally, there is a solution for white (a piece down!) to win this…
greetings, and sincerly yours

this isnt an exercise in cutting and pasting computer analysis so the lowlife that posted the half page move sequenece get real man. secondly this doesnt appear to have a solution.
1.Bxh7 Kh8
2.Qh5 Bg5
3.Nxf7 Rxf7
4.Bf6+ Bh6
5.Bxf7
this seems to even the material balance but still there is no mating threat to black. white might have the advantage due to the more solid pawn structure on both sides of the board.
r1bq1rk1/1p1n1ppp/p3pb2/4N3/8/4RQ2/PP3PPP/1B2R1K1 w – – 0 1
for some strange reasons i have analyzed the upper FEN (with white pawns on a2 and b2 and not on a2 b3 and c4). This fact does not influence the main line decisevely, but I have to apologize @awfulhangover, because the bishop retreat to c2 will also win, because the bishop can not be attacked by a rook or a queen on c8. the other change is on a defending move nf6-d5 in the main line, which is impossible with a pawn on c4.
(sometimes I have the dim feeling, that either puzzle positions, or my visualization ability varies slightly over the course of the day …^^)
