This is a picture of Danny Morledge (age 19) and his girlfriend Summer Hayton (also 19). They were playing chess while they were waiting for start the 118th Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California. They caught the attention of the media for simply playing chess.

She’s hot!
Yeah…she is pretty. What’s interesting about the photo is the piquancy of the image. It’s so unique to see people in the US playing chess. I think that’s why the photo was taken. Also because the attractive young woman in the picture plays chess must have gotten the photographer curious as well. Overall…a nice photo.
Many parade watchers come to the parade site many hours before the start to get a good seat, sometimes even camping out overnight along Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena. This probably gave them time for several good games.
And I suspect they are USC Fans. Go Trojans!

it’s neat that the space in the folding chair is a “window” that frames the board.
What’s really important is who won.
Did the photographer hang around to find out?
The position is quite odd. What happened to black’s pawns?
