Here are some of the proposals. Which one do you think is the fairest, bring the most amount of excitement to our sport but not lose the prestige? Which one do you prefer?
1. 12 person round robin
a) defending champion

c) 3 qualifiers from official USCF national championships (US Open Champion, National Open Champion, US Junior Champion)
2. 12-16 players (2 sections)
a) defending champion
b) the next top 8 or 12 rated players (peak 12 month rating + rating at the time of invitation)

d) the top 2 players of each section will qualify for the knockout matches
e) the winner of of each section will face the #2 seed of the other section (2-4 games depending on the prize funds)
3. 8 players double round robin
a) defending champion
b) the next top 4 rated players (peak 12 month rating + rating of the time of invitation)

4. Big Swiss event with 32 or 64 players like in the last few years
5. 16 or 32 player knockout event
6. Your proposal?
I like the 8 player DRR.
Choice #2 for me please.
12 or even 10 persons round robin -less participants – more money for every participant, but try to include every strong player: Gata, Hikaru, Alex Onischuk, probably try to back Seirawan, and even you Susan! Back to play please!
Door #1 please 🙂
Any format that Eric Moskow can play in. He’s great and he’s not afraid to speak up against Goichberg and his gang.
The excitement will come from a Championship Match format. Any kind of fast low cost minimum tournament to get the Challenger is good.
Lets say 8 players 7 game single format. then the Challenger playes 7 games of Match with the Champion. Total 14 games same as double round robin but 2nd half only have 2 players.
this cuts costs and maximizes excitement.
Last year we would have had Onischuk play Nakamura in a MATCH. That would have been exciting.
Instead all the built in excitement from having the young Nakamura already being the champion was messed up and thrown away on him losing to some low rated players. Chess did not get the promotion value out of him.
Now this year we get no promotion value out of Onischuk being the Champion. We are thowing away the highest value every year.
We spent several hundred thousands of dollars making Onischuk our champion and then we throw it all away and get nothing in return. We need to promote that value by playing the champion against a challenger.
We also need a lot better internet information on the championship then is available this year. It is really bad this year.
I can not understand why no one is talking about a Match Championship. That is the way to go. In the old days the US Championship was determined by a MATCH. We must return to that to get full promotional value.
The news media understands Champion Challenger Matches. the public understands Champion Challenger Matches. Please stop throwing away all that value.
Double round robin.
32 players,8 groups of 4
1 winner from each quad advances to knockout.
I prefer either round-robin format.
It should be like the world championship, decided by a match between the defending champion and a challenger. The challenger is picked from the top 4 or 8 finishers of a big swiss, through some knockout matches. While we’re dreaming, the prize funds for each of the candidate matches should be at least $100k and the championship maybe around $500k.
I still prefer classic 12 man single round robin the best. But I’d prefer to go back to a match championship, with the challenger chosen from the US Open or something.
