Vietnam’s male chess team, one of 154 teams competing in the 38th Chess Olympiad in Germany, finished ninth overall Thursday.

Grand Masters Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Dao Thien Hai, Le Quang Liem and Tu Hoang Thong Thursday helped Vietnam earn its best-ever result at the world championship by defeating Serbia 2.5-1.5 in the last match in Dresden.

The result put Vietnam in top place in the Southeast Asia region and in second place in Asia after China, which ranked seventh at the Olympiad.

In the women’s section, Vietnam’s team beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-1 in the 11th round to gain the 26 ranking of 114 teams.

Armenia won the men’s championship while Georgia took out the women’s event.

The 38th Chess Olympiad, which opened on November 12 and finished Thursday, has attracted teams from 151 countries in the men’s section and teams from 111 countries in the women’s section.
