Arkansas State Chess Championship Kicks Off

FORT SMITH (KFSM) – A tournament that has been in the state of Arkansas for decades is kicking off in the River Valley on Friday (Aug.19). More than 25 players will be competing in the Arkansas State Championship. The tournament is being held at the River Valley Inn & Suites on Towson Avenue.

Players come from different states from around the country including, Oklahoma and Tennessee. They try to win cash and the title of being the chess champion in Arkansas. All players competing for this title must know the game of chess. Also, be members of USCF which stands for, United States Chess Federation.

How the three – day tournament works is called the “swiss” system. It will be six rounds where the players will be paired together depending on their win/loss record. The competition can last up to four hours just for one game.

The championship tournament will start at 6:00 p.m. for players that are involved in USCF. The entry fee is $45 For more information or sign up, contact the Westark Chess Club.

If you don’t have the skills to compete in the championship tournament, but still want to participate. They’re hosting a side event on Saturday (Aug. 20) at the River Valley Inn & Suites starting at 9:30 a.m. The entry fee is $12 if you pay in advance.
