Hundreds of elementary and secondary school students from Brampton made some of their best moves during the Peel board’s recent chess tournament.

Almost 950 students from approximately 80 Peel District School Board schools participated in the 10th annual Peel Chess Tournament. The event was held over three days last week at the HJA Brown Education Centre in Mississauga.

Elementary and high school students in Grades 2 through 12 came from all over the region to compete in head-to-head matches. Qualifying rounds were followed by championship matches that culminated with award ceremonies recognizing tournament winners from each division and schools with the most wins per player.

The popularity of chess in undergoing a resurgence in Peel schools— if it really ever waned in the high tech age video and online gaming. Many schools offer chess clubs among their extra-curricular activities available for students.

Part of the game’s universal appeal for students is that anyone can play, regardless of physical size, strength, agility or coordination.

“Chess brings students from all walks of life together, teaching them to problem solve and think logically and creatively,” said Jay Restivo, event organizer and Peel board teacher.
