A 5-year-old chess player will be competing in a state chess tournament this weekend. Ivanna Harried, a kindergartener at Govans Elementary School will be competing in MCA’s 18 annual scholastic tournament, sponsored by Silver Knights Chess.
Ivanna was taught to play game by her father, Ian, who tells FOX45 the kindergartener has the concentration and skill to play even against high school students. Ivanna practices the game after school with an app that Ian then analyzes from his computer. Ian told FOX45 that while this is a fun pastime and hobby for Ivanna, she receives no pressure from home.
“I’ve never pushed her,” Ian told FOX45. The all-day tournament includes players in grades K-5 and will be held at Dumbarton Elementary this Saturday from 9:30AM to 5PM.
