MANILA, Philippines – Mark Paragua tied with Eugene Torre at the close of the recent Gov. Aurelio Umali Open chess tournament in Palayan City, Nueva Ecija, but Paragua went on to win the title by virtue of a higher tiebreak score.
Paragua drew with Richard Bitoon in the final round to raise his record to 7.5 points on six wins and three draws and tie with Torre. But Paragua’s tiebreak score of 54 points nosed out Torre’s 51.5 points to give the Paragua the championship.
Torre, the tournament top seed, caught up with Paragua after the chess legend routed Rhobel Legaspi.
Paragua and Torre split the P300,000 purse.

Dang, Mark Paragua looks like a mean SOB who will make you resign before you sit facing him man 🙂
Mark needs to get back to more international tournaments to get his super GM status back.
And Eugene Torre, he still got it man. Just feed him lots of Geritol and get him his power naps and he’ll be OK.
From the look on GM Paragua’s face he seems to be saying, “So you’re my opponent, eh? Well I’m gonna kick your butt!”
GM So’s always-smiling face seems to say, “Hello, my name is Wesley So. I am happy to get the chance to kick your butt today!”
