While some kids need flashy graphics and expensive computer systems to play games, 13-year-old Ben Ploehn is a bit more old-fashioned.
Instead, all this Battle Creek teen needs for an exciting game is a big square of checkered cardboard and a few black and white pieces.
Ben, a seventh-grader at Lakeview Middle School, is a young chess player who’s quickly gaining the attention of the local chess community.
Nearly every Thursday, Ben and his father, Scott Ploehn, meet up with a small group of regulars at the Barnes & Noble Cafe at the Lakeview Square Mall for a few hours of intense chess playing.
