Amerlia Wheeless to represent North Carolina
Amelia Wheeless, 18, of Charlotte will represent North Carolina at the GM Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls chess tournament July 27-Aug. 1 at Texas Tech University.
Wheeless earned the right to play in the event by winning the North Carolina All Girls Open tournament in April in Matthews.
This will be her third trip to the Polgar Invitational, which brings together the best scholastic female chess players in the nation. She finished in the top 10 in 2005 and 2007.
A home-schooled student who will attend UNC Charlotte in the fall, Wheeless has finished among the top five in the N.C. State Scholastic Championships in the elementary and high school divisions. In 2004, she was state co-champ in the middle school division.
She is the daughter of Randy and Anita Wheeless
