Yesterday, I had a poll about the game 5 forfeit. The question was:
“Should game 5 forfeit result be changed?”
Today, the question is:
“What do you think will happen?”
1. The match will go on with the score 3-1
2. The match will go on with the score 3-2
3. The match will be cancelled
4. I am so confused! What’s the question again?

the match should proceed with game 5 and the score should be 3-1. this is a simple poll. the correct answer is a no brainer.
John Nunn is correct. the Appeals committee was wrong and everything that happened from their wrong decision should be cancelled. Very easy solution.
Topalov knows he does not deserve the freebie point. tell topalov to stop his childish antics and play chess. he is one pain in the rear end.
Sorry I supported him when he won his title in San Luis along with you Susan. but now I recognize we were wrong. he is no champion.
I would be willing to accept the “solution” that game 5 be a draw with half point to each side. Thus starting with game 6 and a score of 5.5 to 1.5
this is not the “correct” solutions but acceptable to me anyway. this would allow Topalov to “save face”, making the solution be one of “compromise” for the sake of chess by both sides.

I think either the match will be cancelled or the match will continue and before it ends, one of the players will refuse to play, at which point the match will be cancelled.
I dislike how Kramnik believes he is fully justified for refusing to play because he sincerely believes the appeals committee made the wrong decision. I also dislike how many of the chess public support a player’s unilateral decision to refuse to play.
But that means is that if the match resumes and a huge dispute arises where both Topalov and Kramnik honestly believe they are right, then the match is doomed. No matter how the appeals committee (or whoever is deciding the appeals) rules, the player that loses the appeal (or both) will feel he has the right to refuse to play.
And that same player will believe that the chess public will support him for refusing to play. Therefore, end of match. (And a serious blow to corporate sponsorship for the future.)
Let’s see how we can pitch the next chess championship: “Please pay a ton of money to affiliate your name with the championship. Be aware that players traditionally have the unilateral right to refuse to play and the appeals committee really has no control over the players. And that the last match had a disgraceful controversy. Yes, we are really asking you to pay us to associate your name to the next championship, not the other way around. Seriously.”
i started as Kramnik fan but he disgraced himself by refusing to play. shame on the loser Vladimir 🙁

It would mean giving Kramnik a free draw and Topalov would not accept it, though.
Other than that, I basically agree with Ms. Sunshine’s comments so far.(Apart from the fact that it is a bit too black and white. “T is an abuser and K is a role model for children etc).
Topalov does come across as a bad guy and Kramnik an eccentruc chess genius who is wrongly accused just because he did not have many friends in the FIDE.
It is unfortunate to see that even in chess who knows who seems to make a lot of difference.
Totally off the topic, I am all for the “woman-power” thingy, too (Yay, chessgirls, go for it!).
I anticipate someone like GM Judit Polgar will challenge the championship in the near future and put to rest all the silly male nonsense representing the pathetic last bastion of power-hungry, incompetent gender supremacy. (If Judit were the world champion candidate, Topalov side would not dare to accuse her of going to the bathroom too many times! Sorry, I just meant to be funny here!)
I expect Kramnik’s team will never agree to calling it 3-2, and there’s only a slim chance that Topolov’s team will agree to 3-1 (the slim part being mostly what Susan mentioned last night — winning by a forfeit does nothing to prove Topolov’s the true champion). I’ll hold out a small chance the match continues at 3-1, but more likely it’ll be cancelled.

THEY DO IT WORSE, THEY ACCEP TE PROTEST,THE DAY AFTER THE GAME AND DECIDE,TO CHANGE EVERYTHING,THAT TOPALOV TEAM IMPOSE.ALL WHAT THEY HAVE AGREED BEFORE THE MATCH BEGINS.UNILATERAL WAY,WITH OUT THE OTHER CONTENDER(KRAMNIK) OPINION.

The match will be cancelled. I can’t see Topalov agreeing to give up his point, and Kramnik thinks (rightly, in my opinion) that the point is not legitimate. If one of them does bend, he will win the admiration and gratitude of many.

I believe it will continue at 3-1 because Topolov has succeeded in gaining time to prepare a comeback. He has also succeeded in putting more pressure on Kramnik. Kramnink will feel scrutiny for the rest of life from this incident.
It’s fair to be 3-1 but it seems to me that 3-1.5 is the best way to compromise. I fully understand that it’s against any rule but without compromise the match could be cancelled.
8 games more and the score 3-1 for Kramnik.

I find it interesting that the word “computer” doesn’t appear in any of the other posts. Whereas, the likely way for Kramnik to cheat is to take a good laptop, run one of the top chess programs. While that may not tell him what move to make, it may show quickly , a planned test entry, what move not to make. In a matter of few seconds, using the mouse, several planned moves can be entered, and by observing the “score”, a disastrous mistake can be quickly ruled out (example: when Topalov missed the Rxg4 winning move my Fritz8 showed it immediately, also showing that the move what Topalov actually made, was vastly inferior). Then he can go back and save a lot of time not to think about wrong moves. The computer programs came a long way.
Does Kramnik cheats? As a physician I can safely state that there is no known condition which requires somebody to go to the bathroom fifty times in a matter of 4-5 hours.
