- WGP Round 4 report

Only one game finished in a draw in the fourth round of the FIDE Women’s Grand Prix in Ankara. The leader of the tournament Ruan Lufey “gave” first half a point to her compatriot Zhao Xue after the long battle. Humpy Koneru defeated Tatiana Kosintseva and climbed on the top to share the first place with Ruan Lufei. Indian player was the only one who won her game with black pieces – all the other decisive games finished in favor of white.

Both Turkish players Betul Yildiz and Kubra Ozturk were outplayed by rating favorites of the matches Ju Wenjun and Anna Muzychuk respectively. Monika Socko unexpectedly lost an equal endgame after she blundered her knight, playing against Munguntuul Batkhuyag. Cmilyte Viktorija got a comfortable position after the opening and outplayed Antoaneta Stefanova. 20th of September is a free day of the tournament. The fifth round of the sixth stage of FIDE Women’s Grand Prix will start at 3 p.m. on 21st of September.

Tatiana Kosintseva – Humpy Koneru 0-1

Humpy Koneru: After the opening I’ve got the position with big advantage. I think I lost it in one moment but even after I was slightly better during the game. I was not sure if I can win this position or not but just tried to play and find the best possible moves. It was nice game but I had a feeling that somewhere I lost a big advantage.

Tatiana Kosintseva: The game was really complicated. Maybe I should not allow her pawn to be placed on a3. After that black had comfortable development and my pieces were placed not so good. In one moment my opponent found few good moves and I had to defend my position after that because my position became worse. Maybe there was a better move than 36.h6, maybe I should have tried to play Bb7 immediately. After I gave this pawn my position suddenly became very bad.

Anna Muzychuk – Kubra Ozturk 1-0

Kubra Ozturk: My position was very passive and bad after the opening and it was not easy to find any counterplay. Later on I’ve got some chances after I managed to put my pieces in right squares Nf5,.h5, Qa8, Bc6. I think it was good position for me. I could hold it. But then I didn’t see Bh4 and plan with f4 and f5. After that my position was very bad till the end.

Anna Muzychuk : I think I’ve got quite good position after the opening as I put some pressure on my opponent and there was obviously some advantage. I thought my advantage became really huge after Nc5 Nc5 but then I started to make very strange moves, missed some moves of my opponent.

Ju Wenjun – Betul Yildiz 1-0

Betul Yildiz: I think it was equal position after the opening but then I overlooked some tactics. White were slightly better and I was looking for some chances. It was hard to defend my position, there were always different zugzwangs.

Ju Wenjun: I also believe that the position was equal after the opening but white always had some chances as there pieces were more active. We were in the time trouble, so maybe because of this it was not easy for my opponent always to find the best moves.

Munguntuul Batkhuyag – Monika Socko 1-0

Munguntuul Batkhuyag: I thought my position was a little bit worse but after my opponent played g5 I thought it was possible to hold the position.

Monika Socko: I think I had slight advantage but later on the position became equal. I saw the idea Qe1 instead of Kg7 but had feeling that I should have something more than draw. Of course I was very disappointed with my blunder.

Viktorija Cmilyte – Antoaneta Stefanova 1-0

Viktorija Cmilyte: we played quite rare line with Bd2 and the position was very complicated. After Qe7 I thought I had slightly better position. I think it was very difficult for Black to play especially after we changed the queens. I think black could have tried 20…f6 instead of Nc4 because after Be7-Bc5 it’s hard to play with black.
