WIM Tuvshintugs struck gold in round 1. She defeated GM Fishbein, last year’s winner of the Bent Larsen fighting award. IM Zatonskih drew GM Gulko while WFM Airapetian drew GM Fedorowicz. The biggest upset of the day in the open section was the loss by Hikaru Nakamura, the defending champion. He was defeated by IM Friedel in a wild game. The other big upset was by FM Tate who defeated GM Akobian in his typical tactical style.
