CHESS, ANYONE?: Searching for little Bobby Fischers — that’s what Linda Brewster’s first-grade class at Our Lady of Fatima Parish School was doing during the last two weeks of school.
Brewster’s husband, John, a member of the local Huntington Chess Club, came to her class for several sessions and show the children how to play chess. The 6 and 7 year-olds learned how all of the pieces move and even learned to “castle” and capture “en passant,” or in passing.
Games were played between children during the “Chess Club” sessions and also whenever time allowed at the end of the day. At the final Chess Club meeting, John Brewster played all of the children in a semi-circle to allow John to move freely to play all of the boards in turn.
