Chess grandmaster Susan Polgar, the No. 1 ranked female player in the United States, will lead a free chess demonstration and discussion from 5-6:30 p.m. today at the downtown Juneau Public Library.

Polgar, the guest of the Juneau Chess Club, is passing through town as part of the Chess Moves 2 cruise – an instructional excursion on the Oosterdam.

“This is her first time in Alaska, and she’s excited about coming to Alaska and being a tourist,” said Juneau resident Suzanne Forsling, one of the organizers of Polgar’s visit. “But she’s such a promoter of chess, especially for young people, that she was willing to stop by for an hour and a half.”

Forsling helped arrange the demonstration after her son, Brendan, a 16-year-old chess player, spotted an advertisement for the Chess Moves 2 cruise in the back of the international magazine Chess Life.

The cruise also includes international grandmasters Alex Onischuk, Larry Christiansen and Alex Stripunsky.

Polgar will lead a question and answer session. The conference room at the library is reserved until 9 p.m. for chess playing.
