Better for Black is 3…Kg7. Now if 4.Qxc3+, e5 holds the fort — Black’s king is a little drafty, but a piece is a piece. The problem with the immediate retreat 3…Kh8 is that it allows 4.Ng6+.

After 4.Qxd6 exd6 White has all kinds of appealing moves: 5.Rxe1, 5.Bd4+, 5.Nxg6+, and 5.Bxc6 all look like winners.
