I first thought about 1.Bxf7+, however, that really does not seem to work. Yet, there is 1.Rxd8 and white wins either a piece (after the queen exchange) or mates (after 1…Qxd8 2.Qxe5, and the diagonal cannot be closed due to the white bishop pinning f7).

All I see is Qd3 with the idea of Ba3.
1. Qd3 and black has two problems, the bishop at d8 is still doubly attacked and needs the queen’s protection, and white threatens Ba3. I don’t see any square for the black queen that can parry both threats, and

2. Ba3 still seems to win for white.
It looks like after ….
1.Rxd8, Qxd8 (else the Queen is lost)
2.Qxe5
Black will be mated!

if Rxd8 why can’t Qxd5? Agreed blakc will go a piece down but there won’t ne an immediate mate..
Anon @ 2:36 – why do you think there should be an immediate mate? Being a piece up in an easy ending is sufficient anyway.
yea but a piece up and three pawns down looks even to me. seems like you dont value pawns very much..i value pawns as the most critical pieces on the board. if you knew about endings as much as you think you do, you would know that pawns value go up the longer the game progresses.. so his Qxd6 was an excellent observation..
