Sofia. Let’s hope we all will be second in the world in what we are doing and you will see how successful we will be even in the second place, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said at the closing ceremony of the World Chess Championship, FOCUS News Agency reports. “We are proud of Vesko (Veselin) Topalov. We are a bit sorry he is not first. We are ready for a return match,” the prime minister said. “One Bulgaria with eight million people again India with one billion – it is not that hard to lose by one point,” he added. He awarded Viswanathan Anand the world chess cup and the Bulgarian GM a medal. Adelina GEORGIEVA |

Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Ok Great. The award ceremony is finally here. The trophies look nice kinda like flower vases.
But wait. Where does it say World Chess Champion 2010 like it did when he beat Kramnik? I could not see it, I stand corrected if it does.
I just need to see it, you never know what’s up whose sleeve.
Hmm what was that? On bulgarian with 8 million people blah blah..
This is not a war of people or something. China has more people than India but never won a WCC.
Jeez what’s population got to do with this? I see this as a deliberate slight from the Bulgarian PM on the people of India.
We are ready for a return match too. First let Topa go back to the drawing board and become eligible to challenge Anand again.
Not impressed with Bulgarian hospitality to say the least. Infact its close to hostility.
Get out of there Anand.
Thanks for the pictures Susan. They look great. Howevere something tells me that had a different winners trophy if Topalov won.
Why is the trophy shrinking in size? Does it say who won, when, where, and what the trophy is for? I doubt the trophy has place to write all that. My thoughts and I am bulgarian by the way.
Typical Indian reaction
TOPALOV – probably got his last chance. It is a very tight challenger’s field for the 2012 WCC.
Carlsen, Aronian, Kramnik and Topalov himself.
I would not bet on Topalov, I think the young brigade of Aronian, Carlsen is highly motivated.
the best of 1 billion should
be better than the best of
8 million in a probabilistic
sense.I think he meant this.
“We are ready for a return match”
Oh really! Let Carlson, Kramnik & Aronian also agree to it. If Bulgaria has Money, it alone cannot make a world champion.
“One Bulgaria with eight million people again India with one billion – it is not that hard to lose by one point,” he added.
‘Smart’ consoling words from a PM. But what was the margin he expected based on the population prior to the match?
I think Aronian will be an interesting challenger. HE always seems to beat Anand. Last tim he beat him in like 25 moves.
Kramnik even jokingly asked Aronian how he manages to make Anand play like a aspiring GM to which he replied – you got to pay me if you want to know more.
Anand-Aronian will be very very interesting.
@Anonymous 12:08 So what does that say about China or USA for that matter? Both are active chess playing nations.
This match was a freebie as it was, and they’re already asking for another? Let Topalov earn a title shot for a change.

Hopefully the WCC does not bring down the bulgarian economy like the Olympics brought down Greece’s.
Ofcourse if that happens not sure how the stock market will react. A dip by a couple of points of maybe?
Anand’s prize money would be be worth less by atleast 5% in my opinion after the euro went down last week.
what a stupid trophy..err…flower vase
Ok to present “this” trophy and that leafy wreath it took 3 days?
Do they have something like “Things Remembered” in Bulgaria? They etch letters on trophies and they are pretty good actually..
Are you following the news at all? Aronian will not participate. So it’s either Carlsen, Kramnik or Topalov, in all probability. Although Ponomariov will have a fair chance as well :).
Oh not Topalov again as a challenger. That will be so boring. Even Kramnik but that will be better than Topa. Carlsen might be the best.
“what a stupid trophy..err…flower vase”
At least it isn’t a damn cookie sheet! Aye, Puto Madre!
@skeletor: Hijo de puta
Puta Madre!
ja ja ja!
What’s going on? Both Topa and Anand get similar looking flower vases. Topa also gets a medal! You bet,had Topa won, he would have got a huge engraved cup.
Good to see Topalov smiling!
What is that green color stuff around Anand’s neck? Is that a garland? Well… it doesn’t fit that good.
Here are some more free comments:
The trophies could have been made more glittering and colorful.
Borisov looks more like a boxing champ than a PM of a nation
Very sad to see how badly Anand’s fans are behaving. No manners at all. Shame on India.
Did the bulgarian PM anywhere say “Congrats Anand” ? Talk about friendly and hospitable people.
I am sure they would’ve had different trophies if Topa won. Something like a waist high trophy for him and a coin sized one for Anand. They deserve it. Good things don’t happen to bad people.
What bugs me is nowhere it says its a WCC trophy. Let’s pool some money and create our own trophy and give it to Anand. What say?
I agree that the Indians fans are rude and obnoxious. This is terrible for chess. They should learn from their God Anand to be humble and respectful.
Relax you guys and gals. If you were the Prime Minister, and a fellow citizen, a brilliant one at that, came this close, but couldn’t close the sale, what would you say? Wouldn’t you try to console him/her? If you don’t, how can you be considered a leader?
Similarly, if you are an Anand-fan, your man has already won, why not show some grace?
Think about a dream that very very few people come close to achieving? Then think about coming close twice. It has to suck bad… very bad. See Nigel Short. He never recovered. To Gata Kamsky’s credit, he left the field, found himself by doing other things, and is back.
Come on.
Also, when you write here about Karpov or Kasparov, remember they can read it too. They are world class people, let’s not lose sight of that fact.
Good, Anand won’t have to buy a wreath for his door next Xmas.
“I want to give you a Laurel and Hardy handshake.”–Blazing Saddles
“One Bulgaria with eight million people again India with one billion – it is not that hard to lose by one point,”
Clearly you don’t need brains to be a bulgarian PM.
Susan whats going on here? I just got back from chillin with President Obama!!! I was outside on William and Lewis street, me and superfine Jareka Duncan from channel 4 here in Buffalo! WOW ,she actually looks better in person than on T.V. , i never expected that, MY GOD!!!Stormin Norman was out there too, he was our running back on the westside bills 125pounders! he’s at all the Buffalo Bills games in a bakersmans outfit, him and Petersen we all went to Seneca voc. hs. together, and i decide to play chess, cuz basketball felt to easy. UM sorry Susan i thought the Knight trick idea in this match coming from the U.S. was fairly obvious!!! I guess Um gunna have to think up some “new” tricks since errbody knows my old stuff.
Oh Mr. Greene Um lookin for Laurel and Hardy now ! so my son and i can watch it,we checkin out Abbott and Costello now – The Mummy! When it first come on check out all the tricks!!! it kinda reminds me of the top guys! hehe ,My son and i be fallin out!!!
the lastr 2 comments have nothing to do with this post, and by the way there´s only one God.
you forgot to put chucky on the spot.
Topa n Boyko sat atop a wall
The weight was too much n they had a great fall
I’m an Anand fan and I can’t believe the pettiness on display here from fellow fans. So, what if the Bulgarian PM didn’t say the right thing? So, what if some Bulgarian bureaucrat was rude in replying to Anand’s request for a postponement? Why do you have to make a big deal out of every small slight, real or imagined? Anand himself says the Bulgarians are excellent hosts. That should be good enough for us Anand fans.
I am sure that Anand doesn’t care about the size or material of the trophy. He won, he is the World Champion, and that’s what really matters.
I am not an Anand fan (or Topalov fan), but otherwise I agree with Anon May 13, 2010 8:50:00 PM CDT
It was an excellent match with exciting chess, especially with Susan’s live commentary.
Can’t understand all the hate! Spent 5 weeks in Bulgaria and it was great. People were very friendly and the food is… well… a real food, not the junk we eat in Finland. Really, i was unable to notice any hostility over Anand. I’ve talked with 100s bulgarians taking inteviews for a local media and everyone showed respect to the world champion.
So, to all the indians above – guys, just stop the hate. It was great event and everyone congratulate the WCC.
God bless!!

Silly comments by the Bulgarian PM. Should have simply appreciated two great players, and a great game.
This is why I am proud to be an Indian. We always give the benefit of the doubt to the others. We all know how hostile the entire 2010 championships in sophia was to Anand. Inspite of all odds, Anand rose above the pettiness around him and proved himself once again. And the Bulgarians insult him in the closing ceremony with that disgraceful trinket of a trophy and the uncultured snide remarks of the bulgarian PM. But no one in India really takes offence. We are an ancient culture. We invented Chess, forgodsake !!
I just think of how people from foreign countries (especially celebrities and remarkable people from other countries) get treated in India. We garland them and open our arms and make them feel so welcome. We genuinely extend our friendship. But sorry to say that all over the world I have only seen Indians being be-littled at every oppotunity(especially indeveloped countries. Its almost like as if it irritates people to see India do well in any field. So its even more sad that a country like bulgaria ( which is treated as second class by rich western countries) treat India in tis fashion. But we should ignore that and rejoice in our own culture which is so warm and friendly and courteous to all other nations and cultures.
