EAST African champion Harold Wanyama clawed his way back into contention for a slot in next year’s World Chess Olympiad with a streak of four wins in qualifiers ongoing at Lugogo Indoor Stadium.

He overcame stiff competition from Haruna Nsubuga, Grace Nsubuga, Emmanuel Mwaka and a default win over Michael Mawanda who failed to turn up in time for a scheduled game.

Wanyama now shares top spot with national champion Shadrack Kantinti at 4.5 points.

The top five players will qualify for the biennial show piece to be held in July next year in Russia.

The women’s qualifiers start next week.
