SALT LAKE CITY — An amazing 11-year-old boy from West Jordan became the first-ever “Utah Chess Player of the Year” Saturday.

The Utah Chess Association gave the award to Kayden Troff following a rapid round of speed chess at Salt Lake Community College’s Redwood Road campus in Salt Lake City. The speed chess tournament included 10 minute games.

Kayden is a Chess Master and the highest ranked player under the age of 12 in the U.S. At that level, it’s no child’s play.

“I mean it’s kind of fun to play other kids,” Kayden says. “It’s just kind of strange because I’m used to playing a lot of adults.”

Kayden started playing chess when he was just three years old, and documents his journey on his blog. To read his story, CLICK HERE.
