Today is USA National Chess Day!
October 9, 1976, President Gerald Ford set aside this day “To give special recognition to a game that generates, challenge, intellectual stimulation, and enjoyment for citizens of all ages.”
Please feel free to send me your chess story of the day.
Special thanks to Mr. Russell Miller for reminding us about this special day.

Does the USCF do anything?
Okay, one time in bandcamp there was this girl who could play the flute in a peculiar way…
In 1976 while in medical school, I spent a month preparing to meet Arthur Bisguier in a simul, to the detriment of my neuropath studies. I memorized all current lines to the Leningrad variation of the Dutch. The big day came….Bisguier took me out of the book on move 6 and I resigned on move 24. He won 32, drew 2, and lost none. I realized my future was in medicine and not in chess, but I still greatly enjoy the game!
I had a meeting of my chess club yesterday but I forgot to mention it! D’oh!
How come Michigan has two colors? And why is Rhode Island white?
