Chess club now offered at Eisenhower Elementary

Eisenhower Elementary students interested in learning the basics of the game of chess — and a little strategy, too — should sign up for the chess club.Chess club will be held in Room 11 (Mr. Rice’s room) on Fridays from 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Interested students should pick up a permission form at the office for their parents to sign and return.

Lawrence schools take home chess trophies

Three Lawrence elementary schools swept top prizes in a chess tournament in Topeka.

Chess teams at local elementary schools claimed all three trophies in Saturday’s K-6 division of the Topeka Collegiate Chess Tournament.

Quail Run won first, Wakarusa Valley took second and Cordley placed third in its division.

Young chess masters meet at Monroe

The next Bobby Fischer could have been at James Monroe Middle School Saturday.Nearly 100 students participated in the chess tournament held at Monroe.

The tournaments, in which everyone receives an award for participating, are held nine times a year, each at a different school.

Tournament director Dwight Morgan, said all students are welcomed to participate, from any school in the area, public or private.

Morgan said he has had students from Big Pine and Edwards participate in his tournaments.

Morgan got the idea to start chess tournaments while teaching at Burroughs High School.
