kind of funny the best in US list starts with two russian names
None of the top five men are American born. Four are from former USSR and one from Japan. US just does not have the chess culture to produce champions on the world stage. However, although he was born in Japan, Nakamura moved to the U.S. when he was two, and I believe his training was in the USA. And he plays riveting chess.
Nakamura is also one of the most hated players. He’s often obnoxious to the organizers and fellow players. I prefer Shulman.
None of the top five women are US born either–four from former USSR and the other, from Eastern Bloc country. It is great having them here, though, and Susan Polgar has been working quasi-miracles for US chess.
Curious.. does anyone know what Ms. (Susan) Polgar’s highest FIDE ranking ever was/is?
Her highest rating is 2577 but she’s not active. She plays like a 2650 I think. She just needs to play more for her rating to reflect true strength.
This may as well be the “New York Best List”, especially since Rusa Goletiani moved there to help with a chess school. Yay for New York.
