Underwater chess match in Formby will raise money for charities

A TEAM of divers will be competing in an underwater chess match at Formby Pool for charity.

Pete Lund from Formby Pool Scuba School has masterminded the event, which will be hosted by Formby Pool Trust on Sunday, September 20.

It will raise funds for Peter’s favourite charity Help For Heroes as well as Animals Asia Foundation, a charity championed by Sue Prince from Rosemary Lane, one of the novice divers taking part.

Sue and two friends are among more than 100 people who have been introduced to diving through Pete and his team over the past two years.

The event will start at 9am when the first two divers descend to commence the first round of chess and the divers will rotate in pairs throughout the day, in the hope of completing matches at around 5pm.

Pete, a qualified diving instructor is hoping other Formby divers will sign up.

He said: “For safety reasons only people qualified to Open Water Dive can take part, but if there is anyone out there who is qualified and would like to help, we would love to hear from them. It would be great to have a team made up of mainly local residents”.
