Ukrainian officials award winners of the World Chess Olympiad
On October 14, the winners of the World Chess Olympiad received diplomas from the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. Welcoming the chess players, Speaker of the Parliament Volodymyr Lytvyn said that their victory, which had been won in competition against 160 teams from all over the world, “is evidence that Ukraine is indeed a chess state, and at the same time it is a reminder for institutions and branches of government about the need to substantively engage in the development of chess in Ukraine, because too often it exists only due to the heroism of the people involved.” The victory adds to the prestige and authority of Ukraine. After all, chess is not just a gym exercise for the mind, it is also a sign of a high level of culture and tolerance, a real proof of intellectual capacities and abilities.

OOOOH u r pushin chess and politics ok Susan Um callin the U.S.C.F. today to see if they know anything about this stuff, how winning a gold medal got to do with government? I know Susan i sound like a renegade or something but UM just fast thats all.
Well, the government CAN support chess by providing grants to youth programs and such. Also perhaps by financially rewarding the grandmasters when they support their country in such an international competition.
“The victory adds to the prestige and authority of Ukraine. After all, chess is not just a gym exercise for the mind, it is also a sign of a high level of culture and tolerance, a real proof of intellectual capacities and abilities”. — What political garbage! The Ukraine has poor healthcare and would do better putting time and money into that! As for “intellectual abilities”, better to encourage smart people to be doctors or scientist than spend their life playing a game!
There are so many FAR more important things to spend the tax payers money on than chess. Health care, education, social services etc… I always shake my head when groups start asking the government for money. Government should only supply essential services.
Chess is Life! Who cares about health care or politics!
Chess is the reason we are here talking bad about it.
Admit that you love it more than life itself.
I know you do, I can smell you from across the tables at tournaments.
For goodness sake have some good hygiene and bathe at least once a month!
Chess is life. Bad hygiene is disgusting.
