Udith wins Grand Prix Chess in Colombo

The 17-year-old Udith Jayasundara of Nalanda College dominated the proceedings in the Colombo division of the inaugural Grand Prix Chess tournament when he scored 6 points out of the 7 rounds to win the competition at Royal College last Monday. Veteran chess player Prasanna Kurukulasuriya finished second with 5.5 points while the former national chess champion Chinthaka Anuruddha held on to third place with 5 points.

Meanwhile in Kandy, Chandana Wijekoon came from behind to take the top spot scoring stunning 6.5 points while Lahiru Hapuarachchi managed to seal the second place with 5.5 points and SB Kandearachchi finished third with 5 points. NC Saranga and C Lamahewa ended up scoring 6.5 points each in the Galle division. Saranga however came ahead of Lamahewa in the tie-breaker. Prabajith Asela earned 6 points to clinch the third place. The top three players from the three divisions have qualified for the finals of the Grand Prix chess tournament due to be held from January 3 to 8 in Colombo.
