Hmm, came up with the idea 1. Rh1+ Kg7 2. Rh7+!!. This wins:
2. …Kxh7 3. f8=N+ Kh6/8 4. Rh7#
2. …Kg6 3. f8=N+ wins at least queen for rook through skewer, and at the recapture Kxg5 there is the fork Rg7+ to win the knight.
2. …Kf7 3. f8=Q+ is not an improvement to that last for black.
How about 1.f8=N, threatening Rh8 and Rh1. Black can’t check white without losing his queen.
It seems not so complicated.
1. Rh1+ Kg7 2. Rh7+! Kxh7 3. f8N+ Kh8(h6) 4. Rh7+
hmm….^?^
1. Rxh1+ Kg7 2. Rh7+ Kxh7 3. f8=N Kh8 4. Rh7# (3… Kh6 4. Rh7#)
1.Rh1+!
1.f8/Q ?? Qc1+ 2.Ka2 Qa1+ 3.Kb3 Qc3+ 4.Ka4 Qa5+ 5.Kb3 Qc3+ =
1….Kg7
2.Rh7+! Kxh7
3.f8/N+ Kh8/h6
4.Rh7 MATE !
1. fxg8Q+ Qxg8
2. Rh1+
1. Rh1+ Kg7
2. Rh7+ wins
Rh1, kg7, rh7, kh7 f8 Knight, kg6 = ne6 check, kh6 is rh7 mate…other variations lead to f8 Q with check
pf8=Q
1)Rh1+ , Kg7
2)Rh7+, Kxh7
3)f8=N+, Kh6
4)Rh7++.
response to anonymous.
If you play pf8=Q it is draw. Can you see?
1. Rh1+
1.Rh1+
pf8=N!
1 Rh1+, Kg7 2 Rh7+, Kxh7 3. F8=N+, Kh6 4. Rh7#
Now the source :
Pogosyants, Dneprovskaja Pravda, 1976.
Pogosyants was a very prolific soviet composer, so, mention the sources, eg by buying the fabulous Van der Heijden Study Database, which is at his fourth release.
And if you have it, dear admins, use it and mention, for the sake of chess history.
I see that 1. Rh1+ followed by 2. Rh7+ wins in a nice fashion.
But I don’t see a forced stalemate for black after simple 1. f8Q.
Yes, 1. Rh1+ Kg7 2. Rh7+! is correct, but you need to flesh out the solution to include black’s alternative response 2…Kf8. Then the answer is 3 Rb8+ Ke7 4 fxg8Q+ winning.
