Torre to grace Novaliches chess

Manila, Philippines – Asia’s first Grandmaster Eugene Torre will celebrate his 61st birthday with long-time chess friends and supporters by gracing the Novaliches Novelty Chess Club twin tournaments the SM City Novaliches on Sunday, Nov. 4.

Torre, the country’s most recognizable chess player, will make the ceremonial moves with Rodsy Construction president/CEO Rodolfo Sicat during formal opening ceremony starting at 10 a.m.

Dubbed as the ‘Joey Presente Cup’, the tournament is divided into two categories: Youth and 1950 and below non-master event.

Among the early registrants in the Youth section are 15-yearold NM Giovanni Mejia, 14-yr. old FM Paulo Bersamina, CM Daryll Samantilla, the youngest woman master, 13-yr. old WM Antonette San Diego, chess sensation 11yr. old Julius Gonzales, 14-yr. old Juan Carlo Presente, 11-yr. old Jose David Tapia, 11-yr. old Karl Solmiano, Estephen De Jesus, Shannon Aguimbag and Justin Macapuno. The 1950 and below non-master participants include Jaime Criste, Rommel Lucion, Michael Metrio, and Michael Mallari.
