Anand defeated Gelfand while Leko held Topalov to a draw in the last round. This sets up a two way tie for first. If I am not mistaken, Anand has also just passed the 2800 mark, becoming only the fourth person to accomplish this feat.
Carlsen and Motylev both won their last game to share first place in group B and earned a spot in group A next year while Almasi lost and dropped down to third. Humpy Koneru lost her last game and finished with a -1. Lahno lost her 9th game of the tournament with the White pieces to Carlsen and finished with a -8.
Turkish Grandmaster Atalik ran away with group C with a +8 score.
Congratulations to Anand, Topalov, Carlsen, Motylev and Atalik!
I can’t understand why Suat Atalik was assigned to Group “C” to begin with? He’s a strong grandmaster with much experience. Probably would have finished in the top third of the “B” group. Can anyone explain how his selection was justified prior to the beginning of the tournament?
Strong tournament by Magnus, plus 20.7 elo points from 2625. First in group C, now equal first in group B, what will happen next year in group A?
Wow, finally got one right 🙂
