Vietnam’s leading chess players in the World Cup

Two of Vietnam’s leading chess players, Le Quang Liem and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, arrived in Russia yesterday to attend the World Chess Cup 2011, which will take place in Khanty Mansiysk city from August 26 to September 21.

The tournament has attracted more than 120 players from 46 countries and territories around the world who are competing for prizes worth US$1.6 million.

The tournament’s No 20 seed, Le Quang Liem, with an Elo rating of 2,715, will face Indonesia’s 109th seeded player Susanto Megaranto, while No 73 seed Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son will meet Chinese Li Xie, the No 56 seed, in their first rounds on August 27.

The winning players in the first round will receive US$6,000 each and the tournament’s final champion will receive a cash prize of US$120,000.

The top three players in the championship will earn the right to enter the Candidates Tournament to vie for the chance to play against the current world champion.
