West teams excel at chess tournaments

For the seventh straight year, Salt Lake City’s West Junior High/Extended Learning Program has captured the Utah State Junior High School/Middle School Chess Championship.

West’s high school team also took first place in the Utah State High School Chess Championship, sweeping the top four places. In the junior high competition, West’s team scored 24.5 team points. Bonneville Junior High was second with 20.0 points and Morningside Elementary third with 18.0.

Tony Chen (West) was named the individual state champion. Adam Mielke, West, took second and five players tied for third, with Scott Treiman, McGillis School, winning on tie-breaks. Others tied for third included Chase Thorton, Highland; Jose Garcia, Valley; Oscar Gonzalez, West; and Calvin Nguyen, Matheson. A total 180 students from more than 26 schools participated in the tournament, held March 22 and 23 at the University of Utah.
