The prize money isn’t bad. But we still have a ways to go. The US Open tennis tournament is considered to be one of the richest sporting events in the world, so it’s not really a fair comparison. But for aspirational purposes, let’s compare.
First prize at this year’s Open was $1.4 million (more than the whole fund in Mexico City) plus a Lexus.
The US Open finalist and the two semi-finalists still got a lot, $700,000 and $300,000 in base prizes respectively, but quarterfinalists were down to $150,000.
And 9th place gets the flower?
People (TV) are willing to pay to see tennis (don’t know why but they are). People are not willing to pay to watch chess or follow the games online. In that context the prize money for Mexico is surpisingly high. Who’s paying for this?
There must be a million people watching Mexico WCH online!? I guess tennisers must be jelaous?
