It is great that Anand has regained his title.
Anand drew Leko. Therefore he is the new world champion
ANAND IS THE NEW KING!!! A BRILLIANT +4 PERFORMANCE FROM VISHY
If Anand is the World Champion then what does his match against Kramnik next year determine?
Hail Anand the true world champion!
Hail Fischer the true world champion!
Hail Kasparov the true world champion!
Hail Kramnik the true world champion!
I’m confused now…
Anand a true and honest champion
Good thing, indeed. I am really glad that the sly fox Kramnik ate some dirt! He will lose the likely re-match with Anand as well. As I predicted last year, there was no way that Kramnik could win this championship – because he was too sly and too cowardly; winning at Mexico would mean the thing that he fears the most – facing Topalov again. Kramnik, you might be a strong chess player, but you are a small, small man with a sly, sly soul! Eat some more dirt now!
Next year’s match with Kramnik will determine if Kramnik can regain the throne he lost to Anand today.
does anyone know how many ELO points Anand will gain after this tournament? Will he cross the 2800 mark again?
What’s the next big chess event after this or are we wrapped up for the year?
Finally the long awaited Anand-Kramnik match up!!!
Congratulations to Mr. Anand becoming Champion of the World. Hail to all true world champions. Thanks to every member of the tournement, making this great event happen.
If this tournement was going about four rounds, Kramnik would continue being world champion. But non the less, Anand made it.
Congradulations to Anand!
Tournament winner, new World Champion, and passed 2800 Fide Elo rating!
Plus Anand gets to play a match versus Kramnik next year to retain his title, in the classical match format.
Anyway, Anand has won WCC before, now again, and maybe later also!
Well done Anand!
Not only do we have a World Champion who won’t dodge matches, we also have one who neither has a fanatical manager nor overlooks a mate in one, whose last name neither starts with a “K” nor ends with an “OV”, who is respectably married and takes his wife everywhere with him, who will not ‘fall ill’ weeks before tournaments, who plays truly entertaining chess, has a nice personality, and who would deservedly pick up where Kasparov left off.
Congratulations to the world’s most humble and unassuming No. 1 chess player ever, and the first REAL world champion since Garry Kasparov.
All you have to do now is take a cool vacation with Aruna, then think about returning in time to knock this boring vulture of his perch.
“Plus Anand gets to play a match versus Kramnik next year”
I thought Kramnik will have to first beat Topalov and then only can challenge Anand. Wasnt that the new format after the Topalov protest?
Too bad Leko didn’t make a more serious effort to beat Anand in round 14. A 20-move draw is too easy on Anand. Make him earn it. In general, I found the draw rate, especially the short draw rate, in this tournament to be disappointing. The chess world needs to find some ways to ensure more exciting, decisive play by its to players.
Kramnik looks like he might win his game, while Gelfand is looking at a draw. This means they will tie for second. Very nice fights here. Gelfand and Kramnik have played beautiful games this tournament.
Congrats to Anand, the new world champ. Lets see Judit Polgar get a chance for the WC title sometime soon!

Do just like in soccer. 1 point for a draw, 3 points for victory. Although it wouldn’t do anything in one-on-one matches, but it would sure fix round robin tournaments.
A truely undisputed world champion.
I can’t imagine him beaten by anyone.
What’s next – World Chess Championship 2008…
Congratulation Anand, but i do not agree with you guys : we need a MATCH to determine the world champion.
Fortunately, the FIDE seems to have integrated this idea (at last). This Mexico event was signed and it was impossible to cancel it or modify it (otherwise it would have been a great idea to include Topalov instead of Kramnik), but that does not matters so what will happen now (hope i’m not wrong) ?
Next year, Anand will face Kramnik in a match.
Topalov will face the winner of the wold cup (TBD) in a match.
The winner of those 2 matches will fight for the title in 2009, and then we’ll swich for the “regular” cycle from 2010 (hopefully).
REGULAR CYCLE:
Match for the title every even year (starting in 2010) between the champion of the wold and the winner of the candidate match.
Candidate match: between the winner of the world cup and the winner of the grand slam (big tournaments)
I think this cycle is great, since it looks stable, not too complicated, and it’s based on MATCHES
Finally the Charade of the Kramnik is unmasked. Kramnik and his beloved Deep Fritz with wires in the bathroom and the KGB hench people. Totally defeated by the Anand the Kramnik slinks back to the iniquitous den where he belongs. The true world Champion Topalov Veselin should now face the Indian Anand – the rightful challenger to the title.
Long live the Topalov !!!
You forgot to add that he also had a ladder (it may be normal to have internet cables running up the room but why was there a ladder?!).
By the way, round robin tournaments like these are fair. Everyone gets to play everybody and the “World Champion” does not have to relax and wait for a spent challenger.
Tournaments are not “fair” simply because you’re not in a good shape everyday (see Aronian).
Great coverage Susan! Thank you very much!
I can imagine you would have not had much time for analysis, but a few thoughts of your own would have been nice. Might have also provided some controversy :). Controversies make for some good publicity
It is unfortunate that when I google ‘World Chess Championship’, I get a long list of sites irrelevant to this particular event. I am not sure if the fault lies with google or if it is just that not enough people care about chess. I hope your blog goes some way towards improving the situation.
I was reading somewhere that just before the Anand Vs. Kramnik match, there might be an Anand Vs. Topalov match. This is rather disgusting if true. How long is the system going to keep supporting Russian GMs and why does Anand give in to such ridiculous policies?
“Tournaments are not “fair” simply because you’re not in a good shape everyday (see Aronian).”
Wichever format you might support, please do try not to make such logically unsound points.
This Anand character is just a pretnder bag of wind for the true World Champion Topalov Veselin. The reason is that the Anand guy never won a match with anyone important – he is a big patzer. Kasparov Garri demolish this Anand character in a match. Look at the record against Kasparov Garri vs Anand guy – never do we see such pity. Only Topalov Veselin is the true World Championship that was stolen by this Drawnik guy and the KGB hench people. Give only some time before the Topalov Veselin is recognized as the true Champion. Mark the words you stare at here. This will happen!
Poor Aronian! He has to learn from the big boys on how to and how not to combine having a chick in his hotel room during such a serious tournament and still deliver the points.
During such serious tournaments, sitting with your laptop in your hotel room analysing positions at 11 pm must be hard when there is company waiting in bed for you ;0)
“wolfgang1956” said: “If this tournement was going about four rounds, Kramnik would continue being world champion.”
Ridiculous statement.
Kramnik is unable to win a WCC tournament.
I was just looking at Kramnik’s last game. Beautiful. He’s had a really good year.
“Next year, Anand will face Kramnik in a match.

So if Anand wins the match with Kramnik next year and Anand wins the world cup and Anand wins the Topalov-Anand match then in 2009 we will see the match Anand-Anand. Hopefully it will not finish in a draw 😉
The Champion of 2000-2007 has fallen and the reign of Anand (2007-) started. There is no need for thrash talk here or to talk about thrash (= Topailov, who swindled himself into a match against the World Cup winner AGAINST a contract he signed: the loser of Elista was supposed to be OUT as the Team Topailov wanted. They only changed their point of view after finding themselves as the losers – pathetic). Anyway, long live Kramnik and long live the new World Chess Champion Anand!
