A delegation from FIDE led by Deputy President George Makropoulos visited Mexico City last week for an inspection visit regarding the forthcoming World Championship tournament to be held there this September.

Mr Makropoulos was accompanied by Continental President for America, Mr Jorge Vega and FIDE Vice Presidents Israel Gelfer and Geoffrey Borg. The delegation met Mr Jorge Saggiante, the President of the Organising Committee, as well as the organising team and key members of the Mexico City’s municipality.

The venue of the tournament, the Sheraton Centro Histórico Hotel was inspected and the layout for the tournament discussed in great detail.

Other aspects discussed were mainly the tournament organisation, cultural and touristic programmes, general security, press and media relations, logistics, website and content management, visas and accreditation, parallel events, co-operation between FIDE, the organising committee and the Municipality, to mention just a few items.

Ticket sales for the Event have started and they have already proved highly encouraging. Promotional videos for the event have also been done and advertising will start soon on Mexican TV Channels. It is estimated that over 10,000 people will physically visit the tournament apart from a much greater number of web visitors.

FIDE was satisfied with the discussions, work and organisational standards achieved so far and the event augurs to be another great success.
