Chess: Delhi’s Sriram Jha gets Grand Master title

Chennai, Jan 9 (PTI) Delhi’s Sriram Jha has become the latest Indian chess player to get a Grand Master title from the International Chess Federation (FIDE) while three players have been awarded the International Master title.

According to All Indian Chess Federation, FIDE Zone 3.2 champion Jha has been granted the title after fulfilling the rating criteria and the decision was taken at a FIDE Presidential Board Meeting at Bursa in Turkey.

Jha’s current rating is 2511.

Swapnil Dhopade of Amravati, Debashis Das of Cuttack and Delhi’s Sahaj Grover have been awarded the International Master title.

With these new inclusions, India now has 21 Grand Masters and 65 International Masters.

World Champion Viswanathan Anand had become India’s first Grand Master in 1987 and Manuel Aaron became India’s first International Master in 1960.
