To the editor:

I wish to personally endorse the effort of the Stamford Youth Foundation to be reclassified as a parent and school organization (news story, Oct. 1).

My daughter thoroughly enjoyed the 10-week chess program she attended over the last school year. If it were not for the efforts of the dedicated parent volunteers who give so generously of their time to organize these programs, my daughter and others would not have had the opportunity to learn this game, which she can now play with her grandfather, brother and friends. These types of programs are very important, not only in teaching a particular skill set, but in fostering socialization and team cooperation.

The SYF is not solely focused on sports, but tries to provide a broad base of after-school programs that otherwise would not be available to our student populations. I hope the school board will support its position.
