This article is more about current politics than about Denker, but it could be added that Denker was a 2-time US Champion, and one of only two people (Reshevsky was the other), to score +14 in a US Championship. His most famous games are his win against Rueben Fine that helped win him the 1944 US Championship, and the half point that was stolen from him in the famous L. Walter Stephens incident in 1942. In his very early years, he’d been a boxer. In 1950, he was one of FIDE’s original group of International Masters.
Graeme, this is the Denker I knew. I did not know him when he won all these events. My association with him revolved around the US Women’s Olympiad, women’s chess and the Denker / Polgar event.
It’s ridiculous that Goichberg and Schultz joined Sam Sloan in this political game instead of doing the right things for the players and their families.
I paid $2,200 2 years ago and $2,400 last year for my son and I to attend the Denker event.
I would have been a big help if we did not have to pay for the lodging and meals. But I don’t expect these gentlemen to think about us. It’s very unfortunate.
Oh, I see. Well, he probably wouldn’t have said much about that other stuff then. I don’t think he boasted much. I never met him, but from all accounts, he was a prince of a guy. America’s answer to Max Euwe.
He did allow me to do 2 interviews with him in Los Angeles in 2003 and Fort Lauderdale in 2004.
He did not talk much about his past. He was mainly focused about making a difference for kids and women’s chess today.
I learned a lot from him. One of his advices for me was not to give up. He said to keep pushing forward what I feel is right because if I just sit and wait for a full consensus, it would never happen.
GM Denker was a great man. He did so much for kids. It’s shameful that Schultz and Goichberg are allowing Sam Sloan to smear his name and others. It’s not too late to think about the kids.
Yes, GM Denker is well loved throughout the chess community and he has achieved so much for the game of chess.

I have a copy of Denker’s collection of best games (still available through Dover, I think). Very entertaining.
I also read his book on his games! Very inspirational. I got to meet him in person and it was great!
