Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Not very interesting, and a bit of a problem for the chess world these days. Imagine telling a basketball fan or hockey fan you went to a chess match.
“Who won?” he asks.
“All five games were draws,” you respond, “but they were interesting draws.”
“Yeah, sure.”
Chess is intrinsically drawish when played by masters, so more needs to be done to ensure that they actually fight it out to the fullest extent possible.
“Not very interesting” and “they actually fight it out to the fullest extent possible” ?? Did you even check out the games?
Here is the results with more details, straight from the Week In Chess
Cheparinov, Ivan – Khalifman, Alexander 1/2 27 D37 QGD 5.Bf4
Karjakin, Sergey – Jussupow, Artur 1/2 38 C83 Ruy Lopez Open
Smeets, Jan – Beliavsky, Alexander G 1/2 41 C92 Ruy Lopez Chigorin
Negi, Parimarjan – Ljubojevic, Ljubomir 1/2 58 C67 Ruy Lopez Berlin
Stellwagen, Daniel – Nikolic, Predrag 1/2 64 C92 Ruy Lopez Chigorin
Shortest game was 27 moves. Looked to me like they fought it out….
Still, even if the games were reasonably well-fought, nine draws out of ten games is not good for the image of chess. It won’t keep me from being a chess fan, but when I talk to others about tournaments where 70% of the games are draws they can’t understand how anyone would find it interesting.
