When Chennai stopped for King Anand
October 18, 2007

It was Viswanathan Anand’s first visit to his home town Chennai after becoming World chess champion. And what a grand welcome the city gave him!

Anand, who still cherishes the welcome that was accorded to him in 2000 when he came home as World champion, was in for a surprise this time too.

He had told Rediff.com from Spain, “I am sure I will be surprised this time as well! I don’t think they will disappoint me!”

Yes, he was surprised, and the city did not disappoint him. The airport wore a festive look with colourful festoons, banners, placards and also nadaswaram and chendai to welcome him.
