1. Nf6
Now, if 1… Bxf6 2. Qxf6 with mate.
and if 1… Kh8 2. Rxg7 Kxg7 3. Ne8+ and 4. Nc7, taking the Bishop on e6.
1 Qxh6+ and 2. Nf6+ with mate
1. Qxh6+ Kg8 (Bxh6 loses to Nf6+ and then Rg8 mate)
2. Qxg7+ Kxg7
3. Nf6+ Kf8 (Kh8 loses to Rg8#)
4. Rg8+ Ke7
5. Re8 #
Can someone confirm if this is correct
> Can someone confirm if this is correct
Why would you doubt a forced line?!
Anon 9:03:
2. Rxg7 does not work, it’s not a check, and Black Qxa3 mate.
Anon 9:19:
Correct. Another line:
1. Qxh6+ Kg8
2. Nf6+ Kf8
3. Qh8+ Bxh8(Ke7 Qe8#)
4. Rg8+ Ke7
5. Re8#
1.Qxh6
If Bxh6 then Nf6 followed by Rg8#
So the only alternative is 1. …Kg8
2.Nf6+ (Knight can not be captured by Bishop because of the Rook pin)
2. … Kf8
3. Qxg7+ , Ke7
The Black King apparently seems safe here but that is misleading.
4. Qf8+! , Kxf8
5. Rg8 , Ke7
6. Re8#
Now, if 1… Bxf6 2. Qxf6 with mate.>
Since Qxf6 is not check then black would simply respond Qxa4#
2. Qxg7+ Kxg7
3. Nf6+ Kf8 (Kh8 loses to Rg8#)
4. Rg8+ Ke7
5. Re8 #>
There is an overlooked move in this line. After 3.Nf6+ Black can play 3. … Kh6 which wins.
2. Nf6+ Kf8
3. Qh8+ Bxh8(Ke7 Qe8#)
4. Rg8+ Ke7
5. Re8#>
Nice move with 3.Qh8+. I like that move better than Qxg7 in my line. Both lines are forced however.
1. Qxh6+ Kg8 (Bxh6 loses to Nf6+ and then Rg8 mate)
2. Qxg7+ Kxg7
3. Nf6+ Kf8 (Kh8 loses to Rg8#)
4. Rg8+ Ke7
5. Re8 #
There is an overlooked move in this line. After 3.Nf6+ Black can play 3. … Kh6 which wins.
**************************
3…Kh6 does not win for Black because White can still draw with a perpetual check by …Ng8+ and …Nf6+
*****************************
1. Qxh6+ Kg8
2. Nf6+ Kf8
3. Qh8+ Bxh8(Ke7 Qe8#)
4. Rg8+ Ke7
5. Re8#
Nice move with 3.Qh8+. I like that move better than Qxg7 in my line. Both lines are forced however.
*****************************
3. Qh8+ is the only winning move because 3.Qxg7 will not work as Black escapes to e7.
After 3….Ke7
4. Qf8+ , Kxf8 (the only legal move)
5. Rg8+, Ke7
6. Re8#
After Ng8+ the Knight no longer protects the h5 pawn so …Kxh5 would get out of perpetual and White soon runs out of checks.
Qe4+, black king moves to the 8th rank. Then Qa8+. If the black bishop interposes on c8 then Qd5 _allowing_ ..Qxa4+. but now Qa2
defends mate.
1 Nf6+
1 …Bf6 then Qh6 mate
1 …Kh8
2 Qh8+ Bh8
3 Rg8 mate
AveragePlayer,
You are correct. I forgot that the d7-squared is attacked by the Knight on f6. You are also correct about the King taking h5 and escapes the perpetual.
Either Qxg7+ or Qh8+ works fine after Qxh6+ and Nf6+.
Good job.
average player nice job i could not find Qxe7
dear susan, you only want to be kind to yor readers by never showing very difficult puzzles. but try, we will not be frustrated if we dont solve.
Nxf6+ doesn’t work: after black bishop takes Qxh6 loses to KxQ??
White can take advantage of black’s weak kingside with his rook on g1, the knight on g4 and his queen on f4 as follows:
1.Qxh6+
A.1…Bxh6 2.Nf6+ Kh8 3.Rg8#
B.1…Kg8 2.Nf6+ Kf8 3.Qh8+ Bxh8 4.Rg8 Ke7 5.Re8#
Greetings, Edwin
