1. Rxd4 Bxd4
2. Be4 Rxe4
3. Qf6 Bxf6
4. Bxf6#
1. Rd4 wins a piece, since 1. … Bxd4 2. Qf6+ Bxf6 3. Bxf6+ Kg8 4. Bxd5 mate
1.Rxd4 Bxd4
2.Qf6+ Bxf6
3.Bxf6+ Kg8
4.Bxd5++ Kf8

What if black doesn’t take took with bishop on move 1 ?
1. Bxd5 Bxd5
2. Rxg7 Kxg7
3. Bxd4+
My first thought was exactly like Riska but I had no proper reply for 2…… Rc7.
Bob is usually 100% right. He would be correct if he says 4.BXd5 leading to mate.
Anup is ambiguous when saying “what if black does not take rook with bishop?” He has not suggested what is the alternative. With a neutral move white plays 2.Rh4 with threats black having lost a piece. If black plays 1….. Rf8 2.Qd3 consolidates the piece won.
Shreyas has completely ignored threat on white Q by BN.1….. Nxf5 Then what?
2.Rxd4 Bxd4 3.Nxd5 Qa7 4.Qf6+ Bxf6 5.Bxf6+ Qg7 6.Rxg7 Rf8 7.Bd4 h6 8.Ne7 wins.Long winded but not bad outright.
Am late to this one, but 1.Rd4 Rf8 is also mate starting with 2.Qxh7 followed by 3.Rh4+, and mate will follow in 6 moves or 4 moves depending on how black defends against the check at move 3 (only 3 possible lines).
Of all the replies I can think of for black at move 1, the best looks to me to be 1. ….Qxd4, but I might be missing a mate just over the horizon of my ability to see it (I don’t have my board with me at the moment.
Yes.Yancey is right. I was too lazy after winning material. If black does not take the rook,
1.Rxd4 Rf8
2.Qxh7+ Kxh7
3.Rh4+ Kg8
(3…Bh6 4.Be4+ dxe4 5.Rg7+ Kh8 6.Rxh6#)
(3…Kg6 4.Bxd5#)
4.Bxd5+ Rf7
5.Bxg7 any
6.Rh8#
If the position was slightly different requiring checks on every move after 1st move, then it would have taken one more move in my latest comment viz.
5.Rxg7+ Kf8
6.Rxf7+ Kg8
7.Rh8#
